Master Your Brand's Audio & Podcast Voice

How Audio Branding to Elevates Your Podcast

When it comes to brand building with podcasting, many business owners spend countless hours perfecting their logos, video overlays, and messaging. However, they completely ignore the literal physical voice that represents their brand. In our latest episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jodi Krangle, a professional voice actor who has voiced campaigns for massive companies like Dell and FedEx.

Through our conversation, I learned exactly why audio is the secret weapon for making a lasting impression and turning your show into an engine for podcast lead generation. Here are the biggest takeaways on how you can improve your sound today.

Sound Makes Your Audience "Feel"

We often think of video as a purely visual medium, but it has been said that 70% of video is actually audio. Visuals give your audience information, but sound makes them feel. That emotional context is what drives a genuine human connection.

If you don't sound good, you sound bad. Subconsciously, when people hear bad audio, they make an automatic judgment that you did not do your homework or that you simply do not care.

The "Duh" Mistakes Plaguing Podcasters

I asked Jodi what easy, low-hanging fruit podcasters miss when recording. Here is how I corrected my own setup based on her expert advice:

  • Get closer to the microphone: You should not be half a room away from your microphone. Low-end frequencies die with distance, so staying close to the microphone ensures you capture the full richness of your voice.

  • Always wear headphones: Echo cancellation software is where good sound goes to die. If you aren't wearing headphones, the software tries to suppress the sound from your speakers, which ends up muffling concurrent conversation and compressing the audio.

  • Speak at a slight angle: Addressing a side-address microphone at a slight angle helps prevent harsh breath pops and sibilance (those sharp "S" sounds).

  • Use the right microphone pattern: Use a cardioid pattern directed specifically toward your mouth rather than an omnidirectional setting that picks up the whole room.

The Role of AI in Podcasting

With the rise of artificial intelligence, many wonder if synthetic voices will take over. Jodi views AI as a partner for productivity, not a replacement for creativity. For instance, AI algorithms are fantastic for cleaning up bad background noise and making you sound closer to the microphone.

However, studies indicate that even if listeners don't consciously recognize an AI voice, they subconsciously fail to connect with it. AI-generated voices often sound "too clean" and lack the human nuance needed for authentic relationship building. If you want to make a genuine human connection in marketing and branding, you need a genuine human voice.
